About Lachung Tourism


Lachung is a village located in the state of Sikkim. It falls under the North Sikkim District and is not very far from the China border. It is at an altitude of about 3,000 m overhead sea grade and is located at the confluence of stream Lachen and River Lachung, which are the tributaries of the Teesta River. A forward groundwork has been set up in this village by the Indian armed detachment to guard and defend the boundaries.

The period Lachung means ‘Small Mountain’. It is at a expanse of about 125 km from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. In the publication ‘The Himalayan Journal’, British explorer and author, Joseph Dalton Hooker, has characterised this location as the ‘most scenic town of Sikkim’.

The main enticements in this place encompass the Lachung Monastery, which is furthermore known as the Lachung Gompa, and the Yumthang Valley, which is about 25 km from the town.
The Lachung Monastery is a very vintage monastery, constructed in the year 1880. This place houses some murals, along with two wheels. Mount Katao, which is at a distance of about 30 km from this place, is also a well liked tourist destination beside Lachung.

The Yumthang Valley is a meadowland set amidst the Himalayan hills, at an altitude of about 3,575 m. This location is also famous for the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which has more than 24 species of rhododendron, the State Flower.

throughout the winter time of the year, the village continues covered with snow most of the time. The summer months from stride to June are the best time to visit Lachung with a mild and pleasing weather. The warmth in the summer months varieties from 10⁰ Celsius to 28⁰ Celsius while in the winter season it can go as reduced as -5⁰ Celsius. Since winters are very cold, ample defence in terms of clothing should be taken if travelling to throughout this time.
